Our story
We started because the recycling bin was full of our own boxes
Fernwrap began in a garage in 2019 with one stubborn question: why does packaging have to be the worst part of a brand?
From one garage to 4,100 businesses
Our founder spent a decade photographing products for other people and kept running into the same contradiction — beautiful objects going out in wrappers that would outlive them by centuries. We started making the opposite.
What we hold ourselves to
-
Published failures
Most material labs only publish the passes. We publish every batch, including the ones that went back for rework.
-
No lamination, ever
Lamination is what makes a wrapper impossible to compost. We have never used it and we never will.
-
Short runs welcome
Small businesses should not need 10,000 units to look considered. Our runs start at 25.
Four materials, all compostable
- Kraft paper 18 weeks breaks down into soil
- Slap tissue 10 weeks degrades fully, no residue
- Cornstarch film 26 weeks needs industrial heat, not a home heap
- Water-based ink 6 weeks bonds to the fibre rather than sitting on top
Twelve people, two buildings
We are a small team in Wellington and Auckland. Half of us came from print production; the rest came from hospitality, where packaging waste was hardest to ignore.
Ask us the awkward questions
Where our paper comes from, what happens to offcuts, whether we are worth the shipping. We would rather answer all of it in public than have you guess.
